What do we do with the mentally ill? The answer to this question has changed dramatically over time, from cold baths, to shock therapy and drug treatment, to simply locking people up. This lecture will trace theories about insanity and its treatment over time, with a particular focus on what asylums looked like in Russia and the Soviet Union.
