Chinese Brush Painting
Discover this elegant painting technique in which each single brushstroke conveys the spirit of the painting. Unlike European painting, these works of art do not try to create a realistic rendering, but rather seek to capture the inner spirit of the subject with few simple strokes of paint. Learn the basics of Chinese brush painting with accomplished artist and teacher John Smeulders. The instructor will provide materials for the first class and make recommendations for student material purchases at that time. SCHEDULE Day: Six Wednesdays Date: May 4 to June 8 Time: 1:00 to 3:00 pm ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR John Smeulders was born in Hilversum, The Netherlands. John started painting when 7 and worked and was taught to draw, as a studio boy at 13 by Frans Nijs, a well-known Dutch artist. He immigrated to Canada in1952 and after working in advertising and started teaching art in High Schools, Colleges and Universities. His work has been shown in Canada, The United States, Europe, Russia, China and Japan as well as Australia. LOCATION Good Neighbours Active Living Centre, Bronx Park Community Centre, 720 Henderson Highway COVID POLICY All participants must be double vaccinated and must wear a mask. Masks may be removed during exercise but social distancing must be maintained. If the participant leaves their exercise area they must wear their mask. Anyone with symptoms of illness such as a cough, runny nose, fever etc. is asked not to attend. Those with noticeable symptoms will be asked to leave. This class will have a limited number of participants and will take place in a large, well ventilated space.
